BlackBerry Prepping New OS and Clamshell Phone?

If the latest rumors can be believed, the folks at BlackBerry are close to rolling out an entirely new operating system that will offer some welcome features like full multitouch functionality. BlackBerry-maker Research In Motion is also reportedly working on a new clamshell device, its second after the Blackberry Pearl Flip , that will be capable of running the new OS, version 6.0.

The Blackberry leaks come courtesy of gadget blog Boy Genius Report , which acquired images of the new phone and screenshots of the purported new operating system from an anonymous source inside AT&T.

At first glance the purported OS 6.0 home screen doesn’t look all that different from the OS 5.0 interface. The new home screen features a customizable wallpaper, and transparent icons for basic functions like SMS, Mail, Web browser, calendar, and so on. However, BGR says the new home screen will be fully customizable, and the organizational structure sounds like a mix between iPhone and Android devices. Just like the iPhone, you will organize your apps onto separate pages, and then flick or navigate to the next page. This makes it possible to have numerous apps on your device, without the hassle of crowding them all onto one page. But similar to Android, Blackberry OS 6.0 will use a ‘drawer’ where some applications on the home screen are hidden from view. To access the apps, you slide up the apps section from the bottom of the page.

Blackberry is reportedly getting a new Webkit-based browser that includes tabs similar to the recently released Opera Mini for iPhone. There is also a new Media player that has am iPod Touch-like look to it with Cover Flow-style navigation, and a transparent overlay for touch-based playback controls.

Other interesting features from Blackberry OS 6.0 include kinetic scrolling, where the OS reacts to how fast you flick the page when scrolling, allowing you to get through a long screen of text more easily. The interface will also feature so-callled “rubber banding” where a page bounces when you reach the bottom or top of a page. Multitouch is also reportedly coming to Blackberry OS 6.0 including features like pinch to zoom, which just might raise the hackles of multitouch patent holders like Apple or Taiwan-based Elan Microlectronics.

BGR believes the new OS will be launching this summer, and says it could be ready as early as June. Those predictions seem very optimistic considering RIM just launched Blackberry OS 5.0 in late 2009.

Leaks Cough Up Details On Two Motorola Androids

Earlier this year, Motorola indicated that it plans to release up to 20 handsets in 2010 running Google’s Android platform. Considering the sheer volume of Android-related leaks coming from the Motorola camp, it wasn’t kidding.

Add two more Motorola-made Android phones to the growing pile of devices the company is preparing to release in 2010. Most recently caught on camera? The Opus One and and Backflip. Both are interesting in their own way.

Opus One

What stands out most about this device is the fact that it will be Motorola’s first iDEN-based Android phone. That means it will work on Sprint Nextel’s iDEN network and offer features such as walkie-talkie calling. According to the Boy Genius, it will run Android 1.5 with iDEN service enhancement. As for the rest of the specs:

* 3.1″ HVGA 320×480 capacitative touchscreen display
* 3 megapixel autofocus camera with LED flash
* Accelerometer
* Proximity sensor
* Wi-Fi
* 802.11b/g
* Bluetooth
* microSD card slot
* 2.5mm headset jack
* Home, Menu, Back, Speaker buttons are capacitive buttons with haptic feedback
* iDEN PTT & PTX
* Android LBS which is integrated into the iDEN GPS engine
* “Enterprise email”
* Plastic-molded housing with some rubberized texture finishes
* 58mm in width, 118mm in length
* 100g weight
* 512MB Flash /
* 256MB of RAM
* 64k and 128k iDEN SIM card support
* A-GPS
* Motorola dual-mic technology noise-canceling for noisy enviroments
* Flash Lite v3.1.x
* Some of the preloaded apps include: corporate email client with ActiveSync support, MOTONAV navigation app, barcode scanner, and document viewer.

Backflip

This is one of the weirder phones I’ve seen, if the spy shots are to be believed. It is a sideways clamshell, but the QWERTY keyboard is placed on the back surface of the device. That’s just not something you see very much of. How Motorola will engineer it so that users don’t accidentally compose email dissertations while the thing is packed away in their pocket or purse is beyond me.

Other points suggest that this will be AT&T’s first Android device. “Known” specs are said to include Android 1.5, 256 MB memory, 528 Mhz processor, 5 megapixel camera with autofocus and flash, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, and a 3.1” HVGA touchscreen.

This information was sorted out by Phandroid. The Backflip (also called the Motus and Enzo) will run Motoblur, which is Motorola’s social networking service.

Lenovo Unveils Tablet Laptop Hybrid

Lenovo on Wednesday introduced a hybrid laptop that’s either a clamshell notebook or a multi-touch slate tablet, each with its own processor and operating system.

The two-in-one design makes the IdeaPad U1 unique and more mobile than a standard laptop. Lenovo plans to showcase the device along with a variety of other PCs at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

The IdeaPad U1 has an 11.6-inch display and weighs 3.8 pounds. When the display is attached to the body of the laptop, the unit operates like a typical notebook running Microsoft Windows 7.

With a flip of a switch, however, the display detaches, and becomes a multi-touch tablet PC powered by an ARM processor and running a Linux-based operating system. The slate weighs 1.6 pounds.

The two devices share the same battery power and 3G mobile broadband technology and are designed to have all data and documents in sync. For example, a user can surf the Web in laptop mode, switch to tablet mode, and continue from the same point without interruption, according to Lenovo.

The tablet interface provides either landscape or portrait viewing, depending on the application in use. The screen can be divided into four or six sections, with each section running a separate application, such as email, a calendar, an RSS reader, a social networking Web site, video playback or document editing.

Lenovo said the system can support more than five hours of 3G Web browsing. The hybrid comes with an integrated video camera, stereo speakers and microphone.

The IdeaPad U1 is scheduled to be available June 1. The estimated retail price is $999.

On Tuesday Lenovo introduced the Skylight smartbook, a clamshell device with a keyboard and 10-inch display. The thin gadget weighs less than two pounds and has a customer interface for quick access to Internet services and browsing. It also refreshed its line of laptop PCs for mobile pros, adding ultra-portable notebooks and introduced a series of energy efficient machines.

Virgin Media bags the Nokia X6

MVNO adds touch-screen music device to its growing range of high-end handsets

It wasn’t that long ago that Virgin Media’s portfolio of handsets could have been described at best as being mid-tier. However, with the capture of a number of highly-equipped handsets the mobile virtual network operator is becoming more and more of an attractive proposition. The Nokia X6 is their latest prize asset. Boasting an impressive 3.2-inch touch-screen, the X6 also has a colossal 16GB of internal memory, which equates to about 7,000 songs. There’s also a five-megapixel camera, free sat nav with OVI Maps and a host of shortcuts to all your favourite social networks.

Available on both 12 and 18 month contracts, the longer of the two will mean you receive the phone for free. Though Virgin Media’s offering doesn’t include Nokia’s unlimited music service, ‘Comes With Music’, customers will be able to have unlimited access to the internet from as little as 30p a day, while for the first three months you will also be insured for free.

Other handsets that Virgin Media are currently offering include the HTC HD2, BlackBerry Curve 8520 and most recently LG’s Google Android-enabled InTouch Max GW620.

LG Lollipop GD580 is a stylish clamshell phone, which has an external hidden OLED display, 3.2 megapixel camera, 3G connectivity, 8GB expandable memory, GPRS/EDGE, Stereo FM and so on. This handset was released on January 2010 and it comes in three exciting colors – Blue, Pink and Black.

Flip-Open Clamshell Camera Protects Itself

This practical and sleek camera concept from designers Sun Ho Sin and Jeong Eun Park takes inspiration from laptop design to

protect both LCD screen and lens when not in use.

There have been folding cameras around almost forever, but this was usually to protect just the lens, or to make a bulky box

more portable. This flip around design, called the Zero Angle, fixes a very modern problem: both the front and the back of a

digicam have easy-to-scratch parts. The camera opens up like a clamshell and the hard front cover swings 360-degrees to

become the screen at the back. This makes it pretty much pocket-proof.

The hinge also acts as a chunky hand-grip, especially useful on such a small camera. What I like most is that this is

effectively a case and a camera in one: you don’t have to spend time taking the camera out, or finding somewhere to stow a

padded pouch while you shoot.

The render of the design is a little odd, though. The redundant lens-cover makes us think that the flap was digitally added

to a photo of an existing model. Still, the idea is great, if not completely original. Canon: add this to your already

wonderful S90 compact and you probably wouldn’t be able to make enough of them.

Alcatel launches QWERTY clamshell

Alcatel OT-808 available from next month for £49.99

Open up most clamshell phones and you’ll find a run of the mill 3×4 standard keypad. Not so the Alcatel OT-808, no siree. Sporting a full QWERTY keyboard, you’ll be able to bang out those text messages without having to resort to predictive text, or update your social networking statuses with shortcuts to Facebook, Bebo and Twitter. The colour screen measures a satisfactory 2.4-inch while there’s also a smaller OLED display on the outer shell alerting you to any incoming calls or messages. Other highlights include a two-megapixel camera, with the ability to store microSD cards of up to 4GB.

According to Alcatel the handset is designed exclusively for women, presumably on account of it being pink and (not our words) being “perfect for catching up with the gossip.” That aside, there’s no denying the £49.99 price point is very appealing.

The Alcatel OT-808 is available from April on Pay As You Go, exclusive to Carphone Warehouse.

Metal entry flip Xiaoqiang licensed Hot Samsung S3600

Flip phone, in recent years is not Samsung’s major product lines, but as the world’s leading mobile phone business, Samsung still has not given up flip phone, in addition to high-end products introduced this year, G508E, the another is a metallic clamshell, the S3600, However, the low-end of the S3600 is taking the route to skills-oriented, the latest price of 850 yuan.

Samsung S3600C shape, in Xiaobian think it is absolutely forever “epidemic.” All-metal brushed look gives the feeling like to eat “lunch cans,” the same box. But if you think it is an all-metal building products, then you are mistaken. “Sneak” and “metallic” body is actually the body of high-grade engineering plastics coated with a layer of metallic colors. Therefore, S3600C is not a heavy weight in his hand, and body with clamshell shape, measurements size is 98.5 × 49.9 × 15.3mm, 105g of body weight you mention it, not too small.

    Samsung S3600 has a 2.2-inch 65536-color TFT display with a resolution of 176 * 220 pixels, although some of the gap between the resolution of QVGA-level, but the display is quite unsatisfactory. Keyboard connection, S3600c carved with flat metal keyboard, but the keys there is no obvious stripes between the split, but the key area is relatively large, relatively comfortable with them.

    Audio and video connection, the Samsung S3600 has a built-in set of the 1.3 million-pixel camera, support for face capture technology to facilitate the user requirements. In the music player, supporting PNG, MID, JPG, WAV, AMR, GIF, MP3 and other multimedia formats, as well as MPEG4 format video recording.

    In addition, the phone built-in Bluetooth 2.0 devices, FM FM radio and standard USB2.0 interface. The phone’s body memory 30MB, but the user if there is a demand by a third party microSD (T-Flash) memory card expansion of storage capacity can reach 2GB. Commonly used in alarm clock, calculator, and calendar functions are also available.

   Edit Comment: Samsung S3600C has a stylish brushed metal appearance, with a 2.2-inch screen and 1.3 million pixel camera, has also joined the fun matrix shooting. Currently only the price of 850 yuan for the recent purchase program budget, not a lot of friends, should be a good choice.
